Overseas Family Funding Derived from Several Businesses and Property Investments

We traced complex overseas family funding across multiple sources of wealth, applying a risk-based approach to establish a clear, documented and compliant funding trail for the UK property purchase.

The Challenge

A UK property purchase funded by family overseas can require a substantially more complex source-of-funds and source-of-wealth analysis than a conventional purchase. Here, our client, who held UK Indefinite Leave to Remain, was relying on third-party funding from family whose wealth derived from several economic activities, including car dealerships, property investments and share trading. Third-party funding, multiple underlying businesses, transfer restrictions and the physical movement of cash each required separate scrutiny in this transaction before the funding could be understood as a whole.

Sharpwell Expertise

Sharpwell’s Funds and Compliance Team combines a deep working understanding of the UK AML compliance framework with practical experience of international wealth, third-party funding and non-standard cross-border payment routes. We understand that unusual does not automatically mean unacceptable: the correct approach is to identify the particular risks presented by the transaction, understand the commercial and personal context, and obtain evidence proportionate to those risks.

Our Risk-Based Approach

We applied a risk-based approach to the funding structure, analysing each donor and each underlying source of wealth before bringing the evidence together into a coherent source-of-funds narrative. Rather than treating the final UK bank balance as sufficient, we reconstructed the trail from the originating economic activity onwards. Enhanced due diligence was applied to the third-party funders and their wealth, including the relevant car dealership, property investment and share-trading activity.

The Outcome

Despite the combination of transfer restrictions, multiple third-party funders, several underlying sources of wealth, the funding trail was established and evidenced. The acquisition was able to proceed on a compliant basis, with the source of funds and underlying source of wealth understood and documented in the context of the transaction.

The Sharpwell Perspective

Look Beyond the Familiar

A funding structure does not need to look conventional to be acceptable. What matters is understanding the risks involved.

Establish the Source

We identify where the funds originated and assess the economic activity behind them.

Trace the Movement

We evidence how the funds moved between accounts, countries and ultimately into the UK transaction.

Create a Clear Analysis

A rigorous, risk-based approach turns complex cross-border funding into a clear and defensible compliance assessment.

Unusual funding is not necessarily unacceptable. The key is being able to understand its origin, assess the risks and evidence the full journey of the funds.
